Once a month a group of poets, artists, writers & spectators gather for the ADVANCED Poetry Open Mic & Slam. Organizers from NYSAI magazine linked up with RHC to support the movement to have a Staten Island Slam Team entered into the 2016 National competition. For some time now, Staten Island has been the only borough that doesn’t have a consistent slam or a team that is recognized nationally. With your participation & support, this will not be the case next year.
To qualify for the national competition, teams must have evidence that they have a consistent audience, and pay a $500 entrance fee.
They also have to show they have a consistent venue: Which they do at the clothing store Richmond Hood Co. It’s an unusual destination for a night of poetry, but it’s helping the group build up a following, Alter said.
“Every other borough has a slam, why can’t Staten Island? This place has voices just like every other place,” said Eric Alter, who helps organize the Advanced Poetry along with borough artists Jenna Snyder, Thomas Fucaloro and Frank Williams. [silive.com]
The crowd has grown from a handful of people to 50 or so & standing room only! The buzz is certainly growing, as is the willingness of new artists to perform. If you’ve ever wanted to express yourself through poetry or prose, join us! Meet some new people, network & let it all out!
